Ohio Woman Saves Toddler Hanging From Gutter

An Ohio woman was in the right place at the right time when she saw a toddler dangling from the gutter of his Sandusky home. Jill Harper was driving by the home and saw the young child fall from the roof into the gutter.

Harper quickly hopped out of her car and tried to reach the toddler. When she was unable to pull him from the gutter, she started banging on the house to get the attention of somebody inside. While she was banging on the house, the 18-month-old lost his grip and fell from the gutter. Luckily, Harper was underneath him and was able to catch him as he fell.

"I started banging on the house while I was still holding on to him, then he fell and he landed on my arms,ā€ Harper told WKCY.

The child's guardian Kelsi Hellman told police she was in the bathroom and had left the toddler alone on the first floor. She said she had a baby gate installed on the steps but the toddler managed to climb around it and headed to an upstairs bedroom where he climbed out of an open window onto the roof.

Police said the boy was unharmed but was in custody of Summit County Children Services. Hellman, who is a cousin of the boy's mother said she has been caring for him since was three months old and is trying to gain full custody.

Hellman will not face any charges over the incident but police discussed precautions she could take to prevent this from happening again. Her husband started to fix the window to prevent the toddler from gaining access to the roof in the future.
