When it comes to naming a baby, it seems that any word can be used as a name these days, no matter how much it might set a child up for being bullied later in life, but there are still a few names that are off-limits, like the ones already being used by siblings. However, that didn't stop one dad from taking that route, and his daughter is devastated because of it.
In a post on Reddit, the 18-year-old named Roseanne explained, "I never had a close relationship with my dad. My parents didn't want to have children but a mistake happened. I do have his last name but he was never present in my life until last year and I'm currently staying with him." Roseanne then reveals that her dad has a new wife but she doesn't get along with her. Her stepmom is pregnant and the baby due is in June around Roseanne's birthday.
Roseanne goes on to say that her dad and his new wife want to name the baby Roseanne since the stepmom's favorite flowers are roses. Roseanne stated, "I don't like the idea at all. It will be my exact name and surname. I usually go by Ro or Rosie but I still dislike the name idea. I suggested other similar names, the most obvious being Rose but they don't like anything at all. My stepmom says that I'm being selfish because I'm 'jealous' of my dad wanting this baby. My dad is upset at me and says I should be mature and not gatekeep a name."
Commenters were overwhelmingly on Roseanne's side, writing things like, "It would be unfair to both you and the baby to have the same exact name. That's incredibly weird that your dad would even think that’s a good idea," and, "You just don't name two of your kids the exact same thing - you just don't. On top of that, it is confusing and it has pretty negative connotations - coming off like you're trying to replace one kid for another. That's not okay."
Many suggested Roseanne change her name or at least get some distance from her father. One wrote, "Tell them that you give your full support to them using the name, then go change your surname and never speak to them again," while another stated, "This is a huge red flag about your standing in your dad's view. This naming highly suggests he's seeing the baby as his chance to correct the mistakes he made with you. She's to be your replacement. I honestly think you should start preparing to move out and be independent."
No word yet on if her dad changed his mind about the name but you can read more about it on Reddit.
