Taylor Swift's 'Lover' Includes Heartbreaking Song About Her Mom

50th Academy Of Country Music Awards - Show

We're all used to Taylor Swift writing songs that make us think about love and heartbreak - but we aren't as used to hearing her songs talk about the relationship with her family, aside from "The Best Day" from Fearless which was released 11 years ago.

Her album Lover, which officially was released today, features one song that is specifically different from the other happy-go-lucky, upbeat tracks about romantic love: "Soon You'll Get Better".

Not only is the song about a much more country-driven sound than any other song on the album, and features famous country girl band, The Dixie Chicks, but it is also about something incredibly personal and painful - Taylor's mom Andrea Swift's battle with cancer.

Before the album was released, Taylor held a Q&A on YouTube called "Lover's Lounge," where she was asked which song was the most difficult for her to write. She said it was this song, "Soon You'll Get Better" and shared that releasing the song was actually a "family decision" and that she still has a really hard time singing the song because it is so personal.

“We as a family decided to put this on the album, and it’s something I’m so proud of, but it’s just really hard. I can’t sing it. It’s hard to just emotionally deal with that song. You’ll understand what I mean in a couple hours.”

And now, hours after she mentioned it being such a difficult song for her, we do understand.

Andrea first battled cancer four years ago, and earlier this year in Elle, Taylor revealed that Andrea was facing cancer once again.

The song focuses on the mother-daughter relationship between Taylor and Andrea "in doctor's office lighting" and shares how Taylor and her family stay positive by assuring Andrea that "soon you'll get better."

The most heartbreaking moment, though, comes in the bridge of the song where Taylor sings:

“And I hate to make this all about me / But who am I supposed to talk to? / What am I supposed to do? / If there’s no you."

And whether or not you've seen a parent struggle through sickness or not, I think everyone can relate to the feeling of seeing your parents go through something hard, or even just getting older.

I give Taylor a lot of credit for even being able to get through the song in order to record it.

Hug your parents extra tight today! Or give them a call to tell them you love them.
