Breaking Down The Houston Astros Sign-Stealing Scandal

World Series - Houston Astros v Los Angeles Dodgers - Game Seven

Ah, remember that heartbreaking day that the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in game 7 of the 2017 World Series? I sure do.

But... uh, there's been quite the development around the games and the teams in that World Series. Yesterday, Major League Baseball determined that the Astros had created an illegal system to read and communicate the hand signals between the catcher and the pitcher on the Dodgers.

For example, if players in the Astros dugout could see them signal that a fastball was coming, they would bang on the trashcan to alert their player up to bat.

After MLB revealed their findings, the Astros team manager and general manager were fired by the team's owner and chairman Jim Crane.

In addition, Astros manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow are suspended without pay for one season following the league's investigation into the cheating scheme.

AJ and Jeff's suspensions last through the 2020 World Series and are among a series of MLB penalties from the scandal. Other repercussions include the team having to forfeit its regular first- and second-round selections in 2020 and 2021 drafts and pay a $5 million fine. And honestly, giving up the draft pics isn't even that big of a deal because those players usually go to the minor league for a bit before officially playing in the MLB.

You might be wondering if "sign-stealing" is a common issue in MLB? The truth is, sign stealing among teams is common. Base runners have been known to relay pitch selection to hitters, but MLB rules prohibit the use of electronic devices to steal signs, according to CNN.

But with the new discovery of the 2017 World Series... what does this mean for the outcome of those 7 games?

Nothing.

MLB's commissioner did not award the 2017 title to the Dodgers, or remove the Astros’ title. But us Dodgers fans feel ROBBED!

I have faith that the Dodgers will be able to get a World Series win soon enough... but this one stings. They lost to cheaters!
